Angela's Logie hope

02 Apr, 2004 12:45 PM
ANGELA Kelly, star of Channel Seven's Logie nominated pre-school program Bambaloo, got her hankering for the big time right here in Muswellbrook.

Growing up in Muswellbrook with her family, parents Mike and Colleen and brothers Matthew, John-Paul, Tim and Joshua, Angela said she loved entertaining from an early age.

"I guess I always wanted to turn everything into a song and dance performance," she said.

"Much to the chagrin of my brothers, of course."

Angela began her acting and singing career with roles in school musicals at St Joseph's Aberdeen, with the Muswellbrook Amateur Theatrical Society (MATS) and a local performance of Oklahoma.

"It certainly whet my appetite, especially Oklahoma, because that was working with an actor from the big smoke," Angela said.

After finishing school, Angela spent a year performing in Newcastle doing a lot of amateur theatre, including Oklahoma again, Guys and Dolls and Les Miserables with Opera Hunter.

Angela then went on to study for three years at the prestigious West Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

While finishing her third year, Angela landed her first big television role, in an ABC series called "Minty" about two girls (both played by Angela) who swap lives.

"I got a taste of what it's like to do a big television series," she said.

"But it's not like that all the time."

After Minty, Angela did a few touring plays with Theatre South, a workshop of a new opera called Notre Damus and a documentary for ABC called Australians at War.

Her next big role came along in "Annie" playing opposite Anthony Warlow, in the role of Grace Farrell, which she first played with MATS in Muswellbrook.

"I took Mum and Dad out to dinner with Anthony Warlow," Angela said.

"They thought I was joking when I said I'd invited him."

Following Annie, Angela started filming Bambaloo, which has proved a hit with pre-school aged children, as they are taken into a magical tree house, where host Sam (Angela) and Jim Henson's puppets provide fantastic entertainment.

Since filming the first series, Angela has starred in a Korean flim called "Please Teach Me English" (for which she had to learn to speak some Korean) and "The Cherry Orchard" for the POV Short Film Festival.

Filming of a second series of Bambaloo is now underway which is keeping Angela busy, but foremost in her mind is her upcoming visit to the Logies.

"I hoped I would be going to the Logies one day, but I didn't think it would be for a pre-school TV show," she said.

"But I'm really proud to be a part of the show."
