A number of old coal artefacts dating back to the early 1920s have been recovered at Muswellbrook’s oldest coal mine Muswellbrook Coal Company during recent open cut mining.
An old coal skip, which was used to cart coal, dog spikes, nails, an old pick and candle holders are some of the ancient relics that have been found in the past two months.
Operators have been open cut mining the No. 1 Open Cut Extension, which is on previously disturbed underground mining areas that were originally mined from the 1920s to 1940s.
These items add to Muswellbrook Coal Company’s long history and memorabilia collection.
Muswellbrook Coal Company Technical Services manager Steve Wylie said Muswellbrook Coal Company was extremely proud of their historic connection with the local community and the contribution to its industrial history.
“This has comprised 102 years of continuous coal mining at the one lease area by both the underground and open cut mining techniques,” he said.
