TOMORROW marks a big day in history for Muswellbrook with three separate events giving reason for
celebration.
The 1986 time capsule which was recovered from the council’s administration building floor last winter will be re-set at 10.30am along with an additional capsule containing more modern paraphernalia.
At 2.15pm, the Upper Hunter Regional Library Service (UHRLS) will celebrate its golden jubilee straight after the Muswellbrook Council luncheon to celebrate its 30th anniversary since the merger of Denman Shire Council and Muswellbrook Municipal Council.
In a coup, all five mayors from those 30 years will be on hand at the celebrations at the racecourse.
Muswellbrook Shire Council administration manager, Michelle Sandell-Hay said about 60 people would attend the luncheon.
“It’s worked out very well,” Mrs Sandell-Hay said. “The whole day will really be history in the making.”
UHRLS regional manager, Una Garland, said she had been with the library service for 26 years and the week before she started the library received its first electric typewriter.
“We’re talking 1983. Now we have a website that receives about 50 visits a day, or about 1500 a month,” Ms Garland said.
“We’ve gone from being a part-time library service to a 24/7 service.”
Ms Garland said she had seen everything from snakes to echidnas in the library and there would be a display of the library’s history in pictures.
“The actual anniversary is not until August but we are holding an earlier celebration to be part of council’s 30th anniversary festivities,” she said.
“We’re looking forward to the new extended building and also to the extended services we’ll be able to provide, particularly services for teenagers.”
As for the recovered time capsule, it revealed all sorts of pieces from history including copies of the local papers and photos from the Camera Club, including the main streets of Denman and Muswellbrook.
On Saturday morning, fresh photographs of the same subjects taken by Kelly Tym and Roger Skinner will be placed in the second capsule along with Muswellbrook Shire Council brochures and Muswellbrook SES history, including pictures of the 2007 floods.
Written history also includes the publications 100 Years of Headlines and the fifth anniversary edition of Hunter Lifestyle, which featured Muswellbrook.
Any other items for the time capsule need to be at the council chambers before 4.30pm today.
