FORMER Muswellbrook High School dux Joel Wallman has added another accolade to his resume by being awarded a university medal from Sydney University.
Joel graduated late last month after finishing his Bachelor of Science (Advanced) degree with honours last year.
The University Medal, awarded to students who excel in coursework and write a thesis suitable for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals, was presented by the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor David Day and the Pro Chancellor John McCarthy QC at the graduation ceremony.
"Receiving the medal has helped me to know I am in the right area, and that I am good enough to pursue a career in this field," Joel said.
"It was a bit of a surprise, I was competing against a wide range of students from across the country and the world."
In January, Joel was awarded a Vice Chancellor's Research Scholarship, which recognises student's academic record, research experience and potential, to support his research towards a PhD in Physics.
He is currently researching the physical meaning of quantum mechanics.
Joel also works part time on condensed matter research for the School of Physics, investigating potential magnetic semiconductors.
While speaking to the Chronicle from a Sydney train on his way to work, Joel said he was working on a 'relatively simple model, based on physical principles rather than mathematical axioms, that gives some quantum behaviour'.
Clearly he is very good at what he does, although it took three attempts to explain the research.
Joel's parents Mark and Ellen Wallman still live in Muswellbrook and attended his graduation ceremony, along with Joel’s wife of five months, Jane.
The couple plans to travel the world in a couple of years and once Joel's PhD is completed, will look for work in Canada or England.
