Relay raises $60,000

30 Oct, 2009 04:04 PM
The sun was shining on Muswellbrook on Saturday for the fourth annual Muswellbrook Relay for Life.

There was plenty of colour and activity at Weeraman Field for the event, which is a fundraiser for the Cancer Council.

Muswellbrook Relay for Life chairperson Evelina Hendry said the organising committee was very pleased with the event, which started at 2pm on Saturday and finished at 10am on Sunday.

“The weather was fantastic and we had great participation and a great fundraising effort by all involved,” she said.

The event was a chance to recognise the cancer survivors and carers in the community, and also remember those who have been lost to the disease.

This year’s relay raised more than $60,000, taking Muswellbrook’s fundraising total to more than $330,000 in the past four years.

“Our fundraising goal was less than the amount we raised so that was fantastic,” Mrs Hendry said.

“All in all we were extremely happy as a committee.”

Mrs Hendry also praised those who took part in the event, as well as those who gave their time to help make it a success.

“Without the volunteers this type of event would not happen,” she said.

“We had senior first aid volunteers, the volunteer committee members, Cancer Council representatives and lots of other volunteers.

“The bottom line is, Relay for Life is just a true community event.”

As well as fun and entertainment, the relay had a serious side, with the importance of survivors and carers very much a feature of the event.

Many local survivors took part in the ceremonies held throughout the relay, making it a poignant and special community event.
