Kilts, sporrans and bonnie lasses from across the region made their way to the Country Women’s Association (CWA) Hall in Muswellbrook earlier this week.
Muswellbrook CWA president Mary Bowman said 50 members and a number of guests from neighbouring branches attended the club’s International Day activities on Monday.
For more than 10 years, the CWA has also invited local schools to contribute to International Day activities.
Posters created by stu-dents from Muswellbrook South and Muswellbrook Public Schools decorated the hall to celebrate this year’s country of study, Scotland.
Muswellbrook South Public School librarian Anne Solman said children from Stage 3 spent between five and six weeks preparing for the event.
“The children learn a lot about the country of study,” Ms Solman said.
“They also learn about local community groups and how they contribute to the community.”
Muswellbrook resident Ian McCrae was guest speaker and shared stories about one of his famous ancestors, Scottish poet John McCrae who wrote Flander’s Fields.
Mr McCrae’s services were later called upon to judge an impromptu fashion parade.
Some of the members adorned kilts and sporrans they had created from newspaper before waltzing down the catwalk to great applause and encouragement.
Student Chloe Bird was announced the overall winner of the best newspaper kilt on the catwalk.
CWA members from across the nation study a different country every year.
Details of the feature country for 2011 will be announced in October.
Meanwhile, the Muswell-brook CWA is hosting an awareness day on September 8 at the CWA Hall.
Entry is free and everyone is welcome to attend to find out more about what the CWA does for its community.
