Denman Rugby League Club president Jay Shepherdson is urging Upper Hunter residents to get behind the Devils for the coming season in the wake of a poor showing at the club’s annual general meeting in mid-November at Denman RSL Club.
Shepherdson said none of the committee positions were filled because of the poor turnout at the meeting and a second meeting was held on Wednesday night.
Shepherdson remains president for a second year, Amy Irving has taken on the role of secretary, Phil Carroll is public officer and Barry Sowter is vice-president.
The committee is still seeking a treasurer.
"I think that shiftwork impacts on a lot of people - once upon a time most people worked Monday to Friday and had their weekends free but now a lot of people are on a seven day roster and they work every second weekend," Shepherdson said.
"People are so busy these days - but it’s funny how the busiest people find time to get extra things done."
He urged families of the U-18s team to get involved, with 10 players from the 2008 team making their way into grade football in 2009.
"Rugby league has been the major sport in our town for 86 years and we would not like to see it go the way of many other small communities by not having a team to support," he said.
"There are a larger number of juniors who play rugby league for Denman and will need to advance into senior league in years to come.
"The club is looking very healthy - except for helpers.
"We’re going to start advertising for a coach and we’re hoping if we get a ex first grader or country coach we will attract new players," Shepherdson said.
The club had 48 players last season.
"We’ll forge ahead, I think we’ll have a good year. We are in a really good financial position," he said.
The club is calling for any past or present players, parents of kids playing league or anyone willing to come along and nominate for a position on the committee or get involved in the club.
