THE sun made her outfit sparkle almost as brightly as her proud smile – and Meg Harris has every reason to grin from ear to ear.
The 10-year-old St Josephs Denman student ran third overall at the state grading competition in Maitland at the weekend.
But the big news is that Meg’s coach was approached by an elite squad coach who wants Meg to be part of the squad on the Central Coast.
Meg’s mother Helen said it was a great opportunity.
“It’s major,” Mrs Harris said. “They train those squad members for international competitions like future world championships and the Olympics.
“Meg will go to the Central Coast these school holidays to train for five days and we’ll see what happens from there.”
At Maitland Meg competed in the level four intermediate division and won first in floor; first in vault; second in bars and fourth in beam.
Meg started her gymnastics training in Muswellbrook under coach Melissa Thompson and has made state level for the past two years, competing at Homebush.
Currently Helen takes Meg to Cessnock on Monday evenings and Saturday mornings for training.
“She doesn’t like all the attention (her success brings) but she’d like to go as far as she can, she loves learning all the new skills,” Mrs Harris said.
“She’s the one who comes in and wakes me up at 5.30am on Saturdays so we can get to Cessnock at 7.30am.”
