The Aberdeen Tigers and Scone Thoroughbreds played out a thrilling 30-all draw in the local derby at McKinnon Field on Sunday.
Aberdeen was able to overcome a 30-14 deficit to snatch one vital competition point with a dramatic converted try, inside the last 60 seconds of play.
Scone were first on the scoreboard with a try in the 20th minute.
They soon extended their lead to 10-0 with another try in the 23rd minute.
The Tigers hit back with a try to hooker Robbie Rampling to reduce the gap to 10-4.
Scone was able to take advantage of a change in possession just after the restart and scored another try to regain their ten point lead.
The Thoroughbreds had the better of play for the remainder of the half, until the Tigers scored a try out wide through winger David Murnane just seconds prior to halftime.
Aberdeen were back in the game at 14-8.
The Thoroughbreds were first to score in the second half with a converted try in the 49th minute to capture a 20-8 lead.
Robbie Rampling scored his second try when he crossed from dummy half in the 53rd minute and winger Karl Shearman converted to close the margin to 20-14.
Aberdeen lost the ball on the first tackle following the kickoff and Scone seized the opportunity to score in the corner a few tackles later.
In the 58th minute, the Thoroughbreds were over again. The try was converted and Scone held a 30-14 lead going into the final 20 minutes of the match.
The Tigers were able to regroup in the 62nd minute as Shane Allan scored a try after Scone had spilt a towering kick from five eighth Nathan Blacklock. Karl Shearman added the extras to narrow Scone’s lead to 30-20.
James Standing was next to score in the 65th minute after successfully gaining hold of a chip kick from Blacklock.
The Tigers had one last chance when they secured the ball with 90 seconds remaining. Blacklock and Shane Allan were involved in a movement down the eastern side of the ground, the ball was swung out to Karl Shearman who managed to cling on to the pass and cross for the crucial try.
With the 80 minutes complete, Shearman lined up the conversion attempt 15 metres from the centre of the goalposts and was able to coolly pot the goal for the draw.
Best players for the Tigers were Robbie Rampling, Mark Macaulay, Brad Fenton, Sean Tanner and Nathan Blacklock.
In the reserve grade game, Aberdeen defeated Murrurundi by 46-10.
Best players for Aberdeen were Kerrod Sullivan, Eddie Gardner, Isaac Boyle, Sean Millwood and Blake Robinson.
In the under 18s game Scone beat Aberdeen by 44-10.
Best players for the Tigers were Ian Reichel, Cameron Bateman, Blake Ferries, Brenton Thomas and Richard Graham.
This Saturday, Aberdeen will be at home on McKinnon Field, in four grades. Aberdeen and Cessnock will meet in the under 16s game at 1.30pm.
The reserve grade game will be next on the programme at 2.30pm with the Tigers playing Merriwa.
At 3.45pm, Aberdeen will play Singleton in the under 18s.
The first grade match between Aberdeen and the Greyhounds is timed to kickoff at 5.15pm.
The club will be holding an auction of Sports Memorabilia back at the Aberdeen Bowling Club after the games.
