The youth of Muswellbrook had the rare chance to take to the field with some of the country’s best rugby league players as the Newcastle Knights came to town.
The entire first grade side held a training session at Olympic Park on Saturday and when it was over the kids were able to join them for a game of touch football and get their autograph.
Team manager Warren Smiles was full of praise for the support they were given in Muswellbrook and the facility where they trained.
“We’ve been really happy with all of the assistance; it makes it so much easier when we have that support from the community,” he said.
“We like to consider the valley as part of our area and this sort of thing helps to spread ourselves to the community. The field is in great condition which allowed us to have a normal training session.”
Players also visited Aberdeen last Thursday and were part of a charity dinner held at the Muswellbrook Golf Club on Friday night.
Muswellbrook Shire Council general manager Steve McDonald said the entire visit ran smoothly.
“Council and group 21 are very pleased with the way it has all been conducted. There was great support that has assisted the Knights in increasing their profile and combined well with a junior rugby league registration day,” he said.
“I really appreciate the contributions from Coal and Allied who have been instrumental in facilitating the meeting between council and the Knights football representatives. They have been very supportive all the way through.”
Mr Smiles said talks are continuing in relation to a potential pre-season match in Muswellbrook and that both the Knights and council were committed to making it happen.
