While 12-year-old Luke has had a string of achievements in the rodeo ring, older brother Brent, 15, has now had a taste.
The boys have returned from last weekend’s ABCRA National Finals Rodeo in Tamworth.
Competing against the top 15 riders nationally in their respective age groups saw the siblings up against some stiff competition.
Luke competed in the 11 to under-14 steer ride, barrel race and the under-18 junior breakaway roping.
For the third year he walked away as the Australian 11 to under-14 Steer Ride Champion.
No stranger to the competition and work that goes into being at the top of his game, he said riding in front of such an enthusiastic audience was always a rush.
“It was pretty good, they yelled and cheered a bit,” he said of the spectators.
This was Brent’s second year competing at the national level in the under-18 junior breakaway roping.
Entering the finals ranked sixth, he worked hard through all his rounds and was one of only three to rope all his beasts.
“It was hard work in the rounds,” he said.
“Most of the time it’s not that hard to just catch a calf, but in the finals it is.”
With an overall time of 9.05 seconds to catch all the calves, Brent secured the National Finals Rodeo Champion in Junior Breakaway Roping - topping the competition at the event.
“I was a very proud mum,” Jillian Parkinson said.
“It was definitely a highlight Brent doing so well, it is always a highlight when Luke does well too.”
The duo has already started setting goals and preparing for the season ahead, hoping to have as much success in 2014.
