An Aberdeen Tigers spokesperson said the local rugby league club is staying positive as they await further updates on Newcastle Knights forward Alex McKinnon.
“We have received emails and text messages showing support from Group 21 and the community,” the spokesperson said.
“We will bring it together, as a small town does, and has, in situations like this.”
In their most recent statement, the Newcastle Knights have said Mr McKinnon has been able to communicate with his family after his assisted ventilation was removed at the weekend.
This follows spinal surgery that was required after the 22-year-old fell awkwardly in a tackle against the Melbourne Storm almost two weeks ago.
“We would once again like to thank the public and media for the ongoing show of concern and support for our son and partner, Alex,” a statement from Mr McKinnon’s parents, Scott and Kate, and his partner Teigan Power read.
“While there is a lot of detail being reported about Alex’s condition, it is important to remember that it is still early days for him post-injury.
“Those close to Alex know he is strong, and that he is a fighter and, that alone, is reason to remain hopeful.”
While back closer to home, the Aberdeen Tigers are awaiting word from the family before acting on a number of offers for fundraisers and shows of support.
“The Aberdeen club appreciates that we are getting a lot of positive support from the Group 21 competition and the community,” they said.
“We are all just crossing our fingers that he gets to come back to Sydney soon.”
On Wednesday night, Melbourne forward Jordan McLean was suspended for seven games after being found guilty of a dangerous throw on Mr McKinnon.
Mr McLean was sent straight to the judiciary as the outcome of the incident was so severe, but the hearing was delayed out of respect for Mr McKinnon and his family.
