In the Save the Hunter Valley YouTube video launched this week, the towns of Aberdeen, Scone, Denman, Jerrys Plains, Murrurundi, Muswellbrook and Broke are appealing to the public and NSW Government to help secure their futures.
Melbourne Cup-winning mentor Waterhouse and Snowden, jockeys and industry leaders are also lending their support to Save the Hunter Valley’s wine, horse breeding, racing, tourism and other agricultural industries.
“These industries have been the backbone of the Hunter Valley’s diverse economy for generations,” Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders Association president Dr Cameron Collins said.
“Supporting our communities through thick and thin.
“They are tough and resilient but there has never been such a threat as mining now poses in the Hunter Valley.
“We cannot stand by and watch the Hunter Valley be destroyed.”
Dr Collins said mining was in the distance 30 years ago, but it had all changed today.
“Now it is at our doorstep,” he said.
“It affects every aspect of our lives – our air quality, our health, our water, our land and our livelihoods.
“We have an obligation to fight to protect our iconic industries, our environment, our communities and our futures.
“Governments and the public need to be very aware of what is happening in the Hunter Valley and how much is at stake.
“We believe in balance.
“But the scales have been tipped too far in favour of mining.
“Please help us save the Hunter Valley’s iconic wine, horse breeding and tourism industries before it is too late.”
