The under 13s worked cohesively and dominated play in all quarters, an impressive start to the season given this is only their second game.
Will Cannon captained the team to a resounding win 74-0.1-1. The McGrath brothers, Kye and Noah, were in fine form and played textbook football which resulted in goals.
Kaylub Howe played well in the forward line and scored two goals and goals behinds. Our top goal scorer for the game was Connor Gill who kicked four goals.
The Cats U15s were against last year’s runners up. The first quarter was a tough battle in centre field with both sides trying to dominate with some heavy tackles coming from Taylor Pryor and Flynn Warwick to soften the underbelly of the Dogs.
Corey Harris landed the first major for the Cats, with the quarter ending with the Cats a slim 10 points in front.
The Cats dominated field position in the second term but the Dogs turned the tide temporarily with two quick behinds. The Cats were not fazed and rallied quickly with goals to Joseph Shaw and Tristan Warner. At the major break the Cats had extended their lead to 4.7-31 to 0.2-2.
The third and fourth quarter saw the Cats continue to dominate the Dogs. Again strong defence around the midfield was the hallmark of the day ensuring plenty of ball up the corridor to the forward pockets.
The last term saw rookie Ryan Page put two goals on the board despite scrambling defence from the Dogs. The U15s had a comfortable win, 12.18-90 to 0.2-2. After two rounds the U15s are on top of the table.
The U17s faced another tough opponent last Sunday.
The Dogs proved too strong for the Cats, outscoring them in every quarter. The Cats didn’t give up, rallying in the final quarter scoring a couple of goals and capitalising on their short passing game.
James Howard provided the highlight of the match in the first quarter when he booted a thumping goal from the centre of the ground. Goal scorers were Jessy Besford, James Howard, Shaun Norris, Jackson Cook x 2 and Beau Harris x 2.
The next games for the Junior Cats are Sunday, April 27 against Newcastle City White at home on Weeraman Field.
