Desktops were in luck to field some late replacements which helped John Milton’s team into the winning circle.
It was the singles that set the tempo for the night as The Desktop players dominated four sets to two and really it was all over for Simon Groom’s men before the doubles commenced.
The doubles went the way of Desktops as well and they won five of six matches and were totally dominent, taking the night nine sets and 57games to three sets 41 games.
There were two doubles games that could have swung the match back towards the Desktops but they just weren’t able to put their opposition away. Simon Groom and Russell Passfield looked comfortable over Tony McTaggart and John Milton up four games to two.
They could see the finish line and with a head clash on the courts between Tony and John it looked like the lights would go out on this dazed pair. Tony was covering a tight drop shot and in running across court he was cleaned up by a rampaging John Milton also scampering for the drop shot. The resulting collision left Tony spilling claret and a short injury time seemed to drain the Desktops of momentum. From there on the shell shocked pair managed to break back a services and retrieve what was a certain defeat to a 7-5 win.
The other match that the Desktops looked the goods was with Matt Pozzebon and Rubin O’Halloran. Both these guys had lost their singles but with some great team play they stayed in touch with their more fancied opposition right to the end.
Richard French and Graeme Watts were in the end just too consistent and powerful winning 6-4. This gave the pairing a perfect night with both players winning all three set they contested. Graeme Watt’s has improved his tennis out of sight of late and he’s been troubling for fancied players week in and week out!
Laptops just keep doing it with a comfortable win over Sean Henderson’s Smartphones.
Graham Sutton backed up an impressive 6-1 singles win the week before to mirror the same performance against Sean Henderson.
Kieran Scott playing for the Smartphones was solid in his singles win over Daniel Xia 6-3, but caouldn’t quite convert the rest of the night going down in the doubles 2-6 and 6-7.
It was ironic that we had to wait to the last two sets of the night to see some tight competition. Sadly for the Smart Phones they never won these but showed some solid resistance.
Geoff Oldman and Chris Nixon played the house down againt Kyle O’Keefe and Tony Borg.
The Laptop men of Kyle and Borg had the big plays when it counted and there was the occasional ‘Come On’ cheered as they went down the line a number of times. In the End they were just too strong wining 7-5. Tony Borg again showed some real consistency winning all his three sets 6-2, 6-4, and 7-5.
He’s a player hard to rattle and just goes about his game. The other close match was the curtain raiser of the night.
Playing the last match Laptop’s Lincoln Churcher and Thomas Henderson played out a nail bitter overcoming Malcolm Kendal and MD 7-5. Lincoln, who just turned 18yrs the day before was showing that extra maturity in many of his shot selections. He really steered the tempo of the games and gave his younger partner a lot of confidence.
The Result was now in the bag for the Laptops 8 sets and 63 games over the Smartphones 4 sets and 45 games.
