On only his second visit to the championship final, Noman Jawaad clinched his maiden Muswellbrook Security Services men’s title with a well-earned victory over James Butler.
After years of trying and with no sign of the 2013 winner, Jawaad made the most of his opportunities.
His triumph came at the end of a day full of challenging squash.
He took out four other matches on his way to the final.
So, it was a fitting win for Jawaad, who has been the outstanding player in club competition throughout the year, leading his team to the night minor premiership.
Unfortunately for Butler, this was his second consecutive loss in the decider.
Donna Mullane snared the Darryl’s Bobcat ladies’ championship, securing her second title in five years.
She won in three sets against Kristine Agosto, who put up a valiant effort on the day.
In the men’s B grade showdown, Ron Harmer dug deep to come back from being two sets to nil down, to eventually prevail 3-2 against Andrew Lennox.
In women’s C grade, Jane Fairhurst proved too good in the final for her daughter Melissa, who tried until the end.
With the closing of Muswellbrook Squash Centre in 2013, this year’s championships were held at the Denman Squash Centre.
Due to a drop in numbers, the men’s C grade and women’s B grade divisions were uncontested.
“There were fewer players this year but those who played had a good day of competitive squash,” Jawaad said.
“We need to let everyone know what they are missing out on.”
Muswellbrook Squash Club will continue to hold club competitions and tournaments at Denman Squash Centre while it is working with Muswellbrook Shire Council to get a new centre built in town.
