“Lioness has been doing this for about 20 plus years,” said event organiser Betty Eriksson.
The Lioness member won the award for her own garden around 19 years ago and decided to join the club, and is now part of the Prettiest Garden committee.
“As we’re driving around town doing what we have to do, we have a look for the prettiest garden.”
When they saw Mrs Johnston’s Rutherford Road garden they knew it had to be the winner for this year.
The women love searching for a great garden, but they especially like sharing the good news with the winner.
“I think its wonderful to see how excited they are- they always get such a shock,” Mrs Eriksson said.
After speaking to the gardener, the Lioness ladies were amazed at the effort she had put into its transformation.
“She dug up all of that garden on her own, it was just weeds before,” Mrs Eriksson said.
Mrs Johnston’s front lawn had a range of plants on display in garden beds, as well as a feature wheelbarrow full of different coloured flowers.
She said she loves seeing all her hard work pay off.
“I love to see the flowers out; it is good therapy for me,” she said.
