Last year Karen and her band of volunteers raised $15,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation at their Girls Night In event.
This year she anticipated challenges in organising the event because of the tougher economic times but she is far from disappointed.
“I cannot believe the support we have received this year, I am truly overwhelmed and sincerely thank everyone for their support,” Karen said.
Girls Night In has been an annual event in Muswellbrook since 2009 at the Muswellbrook RSL Club.
It is an event that Karen fell into accidentally and she never predicted the success it would have, both financially and socially.
“Some people attend to support the cause and others come for a great night out, I don’t care why they come along so long as they have a good time,” Karen said adding that she doesn’t mind if they part with a little cash.
While the night benefits the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Karen likes to think of the night as a celebration for women.
“It is a chance to showcase successful women in business and their businesses in town, to promote what you can buy here in Muswellbrook, it really is a celebration of women,” Karen said.
The fashion parade involves not only the business supplying the clothing but also the shoe store down the road and the local hair and make-up artists.
Karen attributes the success of the night to the fact that it is just girls, mind you a few RSL directors are in attendance because they are put to work but must wear the mandatory colour pink.
“It is about women going out, having a good time and at the same time helping out others,” Karen said.
“It is about doing something for others who are at a point in their lives where they have no control, this is something positive we can do,” Karen said.
Karen only has one complaint about the event.
“I said to Daryl (her husband who is a manager of the RSL Club) can you build a bigger auditorium, I need more room, but he said no,” Karen laughed.
Whiles guests are ‘packed in like sardines’ the fashion parade runway makes a great dance floor.
Tickets for the October 23 event are on sale at the club now.
