Council paid $3.2 million for the Muswellbrook landmark at private sale in 2011 using Council funds.
The previous owner of the building was Robert Saul of Sydney.
Campbell’s Corner has undergone many changes since it was first erected in 1870 for Malcolm Campbell.
The Campbell’s firm continued to operate until the 1970s until it was purchased by Western Stores and sold off.
Muswellbrook Shire Council is now making plans to refurbish the historic building for the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music, with NSW Public Works assisting in the tender consideration process.
A construction certificate application has also been lodged.
The proposed redevelopment has been referred to the Local Heritage Committee and reviewed by a heritage architect as part of Council’s development application.
The total cost of the project will be known after the successful tenderer is chosen.
Some of the current ground floor commercial tenants in Campbell’s Corner will be temporarily accommodated during the construction works.
It’s hoped the Conservatorium of Music will move into its new quarters next year.
