Desmond ‘Des’ Phillip Samways, 73, died in a car accident last Friday.
Mr Samways was a member of the Rotary Club of Denman for more than 30 years, a past President and a recipient of the Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship Award.
During his time with the club, Mr Samways also went to Papua New Guinea with a Rotary program to establish and build classrooms.
His fellow Rotarians said he was always a fixture at Rotary barbecues for Farmers Markets and for Denman motor cycle events.
In retirement, Des Samways shared his time between Rotary projects, the Denman Men’s Shed and taking his grandchildren to their football events.
At an extraordinary general meeting of Muswellbrook Shire Council this week, Mayor Martin Rush called for a minute’s silence for Mr Samways.
Cr Rush acknowledged the contribution made by Des Samways to his local community and extended his sympathy, and the sympathy of all councillors, to the immediate family.
A service to farewell Mr Samways will be held at Saint Matthias Anglican Church in Palace Street in Denman on Monday, June 29.
The service will commence at 10am before Mr Samways will be laid to rest at the Denman Lawn Cemetery.
