General manager Ian Brooksbank said more than $30 million has been allocated for the two unit overhaul, bringing hundreds of contractors into the Upper Hunter region.
“The outage will run for 14 weeks and is scheduled to have Liddell Power Station ready for the peak electricity demand period starting in December.
“It isn’t common to have an outage on two units at the same time; it is a significant undertaking but the work has started well,” Mr Brooksbank said.
The outage work includes:
- boiler maintenance and cleaning;
- inspections, studies and repairs to high pressure equipment;
- turbine and generator maintenance; and
- electrical and instrumentation work.
The Unit Three generator rotor will be removed to complete a detailed inspection of the generator stator, while work on Unit Two will focus on inspecting and replacing superheater tubes.
Liddell has four separate generating units, with each running autonomously and able to be taken off line without impacting the operation of the power station.
Mr Brooksbank said daily employee education sessions are being held as part of the work schedule.
“Our employees and contractors will be working together 24/7 to get the job done.
“We want everyone on site to go home each day to family and friends as healthy as when they arrived,” Mr Brooksbank said.
Both Liddell units are scheduled to be back in service in December.
