Myles Furgus Wilson was an inmate of St Heliers Correctional Centre.
He was last seen around 2pm on Friday, July 24.
Following an extensive search of the grounds the 58-year-old could not be found and was reported as an escapee to Hunter Valley Local Area Command.
Police from Sutherland Local Area Command attended a home on Blackwattle Place at Alfords Point around 7pm on Sunday night.
They located the prisoner hiding in a kitchen cupboard.
The Sydney location was more than 270km south of St Heliers Correctional Centre near Muswellbrook.
He was arrested and taken to Sutherland Police Station in Sydney where he was charged with escaping lawful custody.
The prisoner appeared before Acting Registrar Tyerman of Parramatta Local Court on Monday via audio visual link.
Bail was not applied for and was formally refused.
A/Registrar Tyerman listed the matter for mention on Wednesday at Cessnock Local Court.
