And, Hayden Maas and Jess McDonald are doing exactly that.
Before he moved to the area, Mr Maas was a member of the NSW Rural Fire Service.
Upon arrival in the Upper Hunter, he began looking for a way to volunteer in the community again.
After noticing the Singleton State Emergency Service (SES) shed, he visited the unit and decided it was something he wanted to do.
“He’s been going [to training] every Wednesday night since,” Endeavour Group Australia Muswellbrook's Jade Olive said.
He also invited fellow service user Jess McDonald to be a part of the team too.
“They’re always talking about it to all their friends,” Ms Olive said.
“It’s really good because a lot of the volunteers at SES have taken him under their wing and helped him out when they see he’s struggling.
“And they feel a part of the community and they’ve accepted them and it’s really, really good.”
Mr Maas said he really enjoys being in the SES and will gladly remain involved indefinitely.
“[I like it] because it’s fun and it gives me good skills and makes me learn,” he said.
“You get certificates and you get qualified to do stuff.
“We go abseiling off bridges and stuff – it’s crazy.”
There are a variety of skills and activities the members participate in.
From abseiling from bridges to doing first aid practise, there is always something action-packed to get involved in.
Mr Maas has been to call outs and said it is a good experience.
He said the most challenging thing would probably be going on the top of roofs, but he enjoys the many aspects of being part of the crew.
“I go there every Wednesday – I love it,” Mr Maas said.
“It’s good to help the community and save people.”
