Breeders and owners Paul and Lyn Richards celebrated Leven Moonstone K103 receiving a reserve junior champion ribbon at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, while Rouchelle King of Hearts won the jackpot competition and was the reserve champion bull at the Murray Grey Youth Stock Show.
Both animals will now start preparation for the Royal Queensland Show.
“It takes 120 days of work to get them ready,” Mrs Richards said.
“Plus, breeding plays a big role.
“The Ekka (Royal Queensland Show) is so different to the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
“It’s a lot stronger competition, but I think Moonstone will hold her own up there.”
Sydney heifer Leven Moonstone K103 was the reserve junior Santa Gertrudis female last month – a result which delighted Mrs Richards.
“We were hopeful she could do well,” she said.
“So, it was very pleasing; especially in the company and class she kept.
“She is sired by Leven Fletcher, who was sold to Tara Santa Gertrudis Queensland for $18,000.
“Her dam is from the same line of females as the 2015 Sydney Show supreme Santa Gertrudis Leven Ophelia K100.
“She was described as a heifer that oozes femininity while having a great carcase.
“She will no doubt produce many calves that will grace the show ring and improve many herds.”
Rouchelle King of Hearts was revealed as part of the Murray Grey Youth Stock Show, held in conjunction with the 50th Clipex National in Wodonga.
He was shown by Hannah Powe of Goondoola Murray Grey from Cargo.
“The bull is 16 months and weighs 760kg, sired by Rouchelle Yuppie,” Mrs Richards said.
“Hannah was also named reserve champion herdsmen, parader and judge.
“In support of the Murray Grey Youth Stock Show, we donated 10 straws of semen to be auctioned at the dinner.
“The semen sold for $150 per straw, being highly sought-after by studs from Western Australia and South Australia, selling to Bottlesford Murray Grey Stud South Australia.
“Two of his paternal sisters sold at the Murray Grey National for $2500.”
Moonstone and King of Hearts will both be on display, along with many other studs, at the Richards’ property, Leven, at Northern Beef Week in early July.
