And, he welcomed further funding from the NSW Budget for the project.
“$3.1m is allocated for the 2016/17 financial year for detailed planning, required in order to progress the Muswellbrook Bypass,” Mr Johnsen said.
In March 2015, the NSW Government announced $68m through the Rebuilding NSW Infrastructure Plan to get the New England Highway bypass of Muswellbrook ready for construction.
The NSW Government has allocated a total of $3.1m in funding in 2016/17 to continue planning of the project.
“Roads and Maritime Services is continuing with the development of the project in readiness for future construction funding from the federal government, however in 2016/17 work will continue on the review of the strategic design of the preferred route,” Mr Johnsen said.
“The work undertaken in 2016/17 includes survey, geotechnical assessment, community consultation and potential land acquisitions.
“At least four years of planning is required to complete all consultation and investigation tasks, before major construction can start.
“The project is also subject to business case approval.
“This is good news for the Muswellbrook community.
“Like building a house, you don’t just put the roof on the ground.
“You need to plan and build the foundations first and a bypass is no different in that respect.”
