While the town’s teams have represented the region strongly this season, our individual achievements continue to pile up in all codes.
During the week, Muswellbrook Rams duo Cade Boney and Gary Jones were named the Hunter Valley Group 21 Rugby League player and coach of the year respectively.
Then talented Muswellbrook Cats youngster Beau Harris tied for the Chris Arnold Medal as the Black Diamond AFL best and fairest player in second division.
Team mate Adam Higham walked away with the leading goalkicker honour.
To top it off, Ken and Annette Garland received the James J Arnold Volunteer of the Year Award.
Now, the Muswellbrook Heelers have joined the winner’s list.
Cameron Young and Ben Heriot were jointly awarded the Cyril Burke Medal for the best and fairest player in the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union first division competition.
Club president Greg Buckley said it was a fitting reward for the pair’s hard work.
“Ben is our captain and Cameron is one of our vice-captains,” he said.
“It’s a fantastic achievement for the boys to win this award.
“Ben has now captured it two years running, which is a credit to him.
“But, to have two of our Heelers tie (for the award) is a massive effort.
“The Muswellbrook Rugby Union Club has now produced six different Cyril Burke Medallists with some players winning it multiple times.
“So, we’ve staked a claim for this award in 1996, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
“Cameron and Ben, you have done yourself, our club and Muswellbrook very proud.”
