The gifted 12-year-old sprinter returned home from the NSW PSSA National Championships on Tuesday with three gleaming gold medals in his grasp.
The Muswellbrook Public School student set the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre alight with victories in the 100m, 200m and 4 x 100m relay events.
After attending the opening ceremony last Friday, Perry contested a heat and the final of the 200m less than 24 hours later.
He went into the decider as the fastest qualifier, with a South Australian athlete just a half-second in arrears.
But, when it counted most, the Year 6 pupil had the field covered and registered a new personal best (PB) time, thanks to a brilliant 23.87 seconds.
On Sunday, he tackled the 100m, qualifying second fastest 12.01 to 11.95.
The final saw Perry lead early before being overtaken.
However, he fought back to win in 11.76, snaring another PB in the process.
He wrapped up proceedings later that day with a further victory in the 4 x 100m relay, with the NSW team clocking an impressive 48.25.
Perry admitted it capped off a great weekend.
“I was really glad to set PBs in both the 100m and 200m,” he said.
“And, even happier I improved on my state times.
“I actually thought I’d broken the national record [in the 200m] with 23.87.
“There are not many 12 year olds who record times in the 23s.
“I defended my 200m title, and cut almost a full two seconds off [my time], so I can’t complain.
“As for the 100m, I finished runner-up in that race last year.
“So, I trained hard to go one better – and it paid off.”
Despite those excellent results, Perry shows no signs of slowing down.
“I’ll keep focused on my fitness levels over the next couple of months and then return to speed work early next year,” he said.
“I’m eyeing off the NSW and Australian titles in 2017.
“I hope to enter the 14 years’ age group but I have to go through the qualification process.
“However, I’m confident of doing that.”
