The victim, 62, answered a knock on his Howe Street unit about 9pm on Monday before one of several men pushed their way through the door and inside.
An altercation took place and the resident suffered a stab wound to the arm.
The invaders fled before the man took himself to Singleton Hospital.
He was transferred to John Hunter Hospital where his condition was reported to be stable on Tuesday.
The victim has not cooperated with police.
A crime scene was established and Hunter Valley detectives are investigating.
