Not so long ago, the Aberdeen Tigers captain-coach vowed to guide the Upper Hunter club to a Group 21 premiership.

And, after going so close in 2016, he’s determined to fulfil that promise.

“I was more than happy to coach again,” Walker said.

“When I came here, I told the officials I’d win them a title – and I’m keen to do that.

“The club’s done the right thing by me, so it would be a nice way to repay them.

“Last year was definitely a learning experience.

“However, I thought we developed well and improved each game.”

The Tigers suffered a heart-breaking “golden point” loss to Scone in a nail-biting final, only to see the Thoroughbreds upset the Muswellbrook Rams in the decider.

“It was a missed opportunity,” Walker admitted.

“If we’d beaten Scone in that match, I’m positive we would have won the grand final.

“Now, we’re focused on going one [or two] better.”

While Aberdeen will miss playmaker Joey Griffiths, Guy Thompson and Josh Schmiedel are handy additions to the senior squad.

“We’ve lost a few blokes but signed some key guys in the forwards,” Walker said.

“I believe we lacked a front-rower last year.

“But, I’m confident of a good season in 2017 – we’ll be top three.

“It’s time to get serious.

“We’re training twice a week.

“We’ll also host a trial match against Central Newcastle at McKinnon Field on March 11.”

Following seven seasons, two grand finals and a minor premiership in the Newcastle competition, NSW Country representative Schmiedel boasts a ton of experience.

The 29-year-old forward opted to join the Tigers this year after the club secured him employment in the mining industry.

Schmiedel said it was a difficult decision to part ways with the Macquarie Scorpions, especially after consecutive losses in Newcastle Rugby League deciders, but ultimately the right one for his fiancée and two young daughters.

“This change has come about because I am doing something for my family, my partner and my two beautiful little girls,” he explained.

“Over the past seven years, I have had the most memorable moments and have literally made brothers for life. 

“Been through some tough seasons, but stuck through to now – our first ever minor premiership, grand finalists and the club is a dominant force on the brink of something really special.”
