While rugby is usually played in the cooler months, Bruce Rauqe, Joe Besetimoala, Cameron Young and Aisea Raitala will ply their trade in a number of sevens tournaments at Kiama (February 25), Hamilton and Crescent Head.
For Rauqe and Besetimoala, it’s also a chance to shine again on familiar turf.
“We won the Country Cup at Kiama in 2015 and reached the final at Crescent Head [that same year],” Besetimoala said.
“However, we’re aiming for higher this time around.
“We’re looking forward to meeting Sydney teams in the open competition.”
Even though he’s not mentoring the local boys on this occasion, club coach Mick Hall believes the Heelers contingent “should do well”.
“They’re joining up with a few lads from Fiji, so they’ll give it a good shake,” he said.
“In fact, the flair of sevens football suits their natural style.
“But, they’re taking it seriously.
“They’ve been training since December to prepare for the tournaments.”
