For 21-year-old Jarrod Shackleton from Denman, winning a Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grant in 2014 was a great help.
And, now, he’s encouraging other apprentice plumbers to apply for one of the 2017 Rheem grants.
Applications are still open, but apprentice plumbers should get in quick as they close on March 12.
Mr Shackleton impressed the judges in 2014 because of his obvious dedication to the trade and his ability to not let a hearing impairment affect his commitment.
He has worked out ways to ensure he can hear in all situations.
He pays close attention to what is being said and lip reads to ensure no mistakes are made.
Plus, when he is under or on top of a house he wears an FM system commonly used by deaf or hard of hearing people.
His boss also has a microphone attached to him, which allows them to communicate.
“The $1000 grant was a great assistance and I spent it on essential tools and clothes required for my trade,” Mr Shackleton said.
“I enjoy the variety of the job and never knowing the challenges that the day may bring.”
One thing he doesn’t miss though is the two-and-a-half-hour 370km round trip to Tamworth TAFE to undertake his studies, though he made some great friends while studying there.
“I’m very thankful to my employers, Barry and Amanda McLean from Barry McLean Plumbing, for giving me the opportunity to learn and to work in such a great trade,” Mr Shackleton said.
This year there are 10 grants on offer valued at more than $3000 each.
Each grant will comprise $2000 to go towards TAFE/RTO fees and text books, a $1000 voucher from the merchant of their choice to go towards tools, plus a tool bag.
Successful grant recipients will be announced on Friday, April 14.
Applicants can download the form from the website at www.rheem.com.au/apprentice and either post, email or fax it (details are on the application form).
