The pre-season AFL tournament, now in its third year, kicks off from 9am with the Cats facing the Singleton Roosters, Maitland Saints, Newcastle City and Tamworth Roos in a shortened version of the code.
Each match consists of 15-minute halves, with the grand final scheduled for 5pm.
“Newcastle City, the current holders of the cup, has won it every year, so it would be good to put someone else’s name on it,” Muswellbrook Cats president Ken Garland said.
“The prizemoney should be extra incentive for the teams.
“For us, as a club, we’re still in the early stages of the pre-season.
“We have a lot of new faces, too.
“It’ll be a chance for our coach, Brian Scott, to see how we’re shaping up and what areas we can improve on before the Black Diamond AFL competition starts.”
The Cats will also celebrate a historic moment this weekend with the women’s side taking part in a “friendly” with neighbours Singleton.
The girls run onto Weeraman Field at 1pm and, again, at 4.20pm.
“It’ll be Muswellbrook’s first hit-out,” said Garland, who mentors the team.
“We’ve had great numbers over the past couple of months – and they’ve been training hard.
“We have 20 names on the list and hoping to obtain a few more.
“The girls are picking up skills; and looking very keen.
“It will be terrific for them to get some game time under their belts.
“They’re really developing a taste for the sport, so we’re pleased Singleton can come up on this historic occasion.”
