The award is presented to a journalism student who has demonstrated a passion to report on issues affecting rural and regional communities. Created through a private donation by John B Fairfax it is managed by the RAS Foundation and includes a $10,000 scholarship plus practical work experience at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
Elise is currently studying a Bachelor of Communication majoring in journalism at the University of Newcastle. “I am extremely grateful and humbled that I have been chosen for this scholarship and I look forward to the many wonderful experiences it will offer me from financial support to industry experience,” she said.
Inspired by her rural roots, Elise plans to support rural and regional communities as a journalist and enjoys the sense of belonging she has gained through her reporting of local issues in her home town where she works part-time at the Singleton Argus.
“After spending my entire life in a regional community, I feel as though my writing will allow me to give back to the places and people who have helped shape me. “I believe the vitality of our communities rely on our ability to communicate locally as well as on a wider platform. I hope to be a part of the next generation of rural reporters so I can work to ensure that the stories of rural and regional areas continue to be told,” she said.
