The Cats were right in the game for the first three quarters before Gosford settled in the last term to run out winners by 37 points.
Final scores were Gosford 15.11.101 to Muswellbrook 10.4.64.
Despite losing, the result shows the continued improvement made by the Cats in 2017.
Jonathan Williams, Adam Higham and Kyle Bray all managed two goals for the Muswellbrook.
The Cats were best served by Dominic White, Matthew Merrett, Bray, Higham, the consistent Cam Benkovic and Jackson Cook.
