That was the main purpose of St James’ Primary School’s Pyjama Day in aid of the St Vincent de Paul Society’s CEO Sleepout.
The annual event raises the profile of the more than 2.5 million Australians living below the poverty line and more than 105,000 Australians experiencing homelessness.
“First and foremost it’s about awareness about the plight of people in poverty,” principal Niamh Marzol said.
“We’re trying to instill in children they need to be grateful and appreciate what they have.
“And also the fact that this can happen anywhere.”
Children brought a gold coin donation for the opportunity to wear their comfiest clothes, and also had the opportunity to try a special lunch of fried rice and spring rolls.
“I want the kids to see they can actually make a difference,” Ms Marzol said.
The principal will represent the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle at the CEO Sleepout at Newcastle on Thursday evening.
