These are just some of the ways those who were close to Lukas (Newton) Gleeson described him.
On Friday afternoon, a group of those who knew him met for a drink and a barbecue to remember their mate, a decade after he was killed.
Following a memorial at the Prince of Wales Tavern, they proceeded to the Sydney Street site where the tragedy unfolded, for a minute’s silence and to lay tributes.
Friends Brett Benge, Shay Burgess and Jon Cribb believed it was a special event because he was a very good mate who was taken so early.
“It’s been 10 years and we’re all still here and he’s never, ever been forgotten,” Mr Burgess said.
“Ten years might have gone by, but it doesn’t lessen the blow.”
“I can’t think of any bad memories, everything ends with a smile,” added Mr Cribb.
Mr Benge said the Muswellbrook born-and-bred man was the kind of person who would have been there having a laugh with them.
“He was everyone’s friend,” he said.
So, as they remembered the 22-year-old, they reflected on the fun they shared.
“It’s a tribute not to forget a friend and brother; to celebrate the life he did have,” Mr Cribb said.
The gathering was the first time fellow friend Tegan O’Brien had returned to the site since the disaster.
“The night that it happened we were celebrating my 18th,” she said.
“Everybody was going to come back to my place.
“I tried to get him in a Taxi but he wanted to finish his drink.”
A short while later, she received the news she never wanted to hear.
Ms O’Brien said the thought of returning was daunting at first, but she was glad she went and was able to meet up with everyone.
“He was a sweet, innocent guy, and this should never have happened to him,” she said.
“I think about him every day.”
They may never understand why it happened, especially to someone so thoughtful of others.
But, they will continue to reflect on the good memories, and how the moments spent with him made them better for it today.
