BOOKS ARE FUN: Muswellbrook Girl Guides members Chelsea Oatley, Samantha hocking, Joan Rafferty, Georgia Kelly are looking forward to the upcoming event.

IF you missed out on the Girl Guides Book Sale last year, don’t despair.

The successful event will return later this month in conjunction with the St Alban’s Spring Fair.

From 9am to 3pm, on Saturday and Sunday, August 26 and 27, visit the St Alban’s Hall in Hunter Terrace to browse the wide collection of pre-loved books.

Muswellbrook Girl Guides unit leader Sally Jackson said the event was a major fundraiser for the group.

This year, the team is focusing on renovating the bathrooms at their hall, aiming to reach a total of $1500.

“We’ve got thousands of books,” she said.

We’ve had great donations from lots of people and we’ve got heaps more books from last year.

“[There are] thousands of titles, all different genres every variety you can possibly imagine – kids books, cook books, self help books – there’s a huge range.”

Mrs Jackson said it was good for the children to be involved too, to see how their hall is maintained and taking ownership of it.

“It also gets them to experience working with people in the public and handling money,” she said.

“We’ve made little bookmarks to give as thank you gifts.

“They’re really supportive and they loved doing it last year.

“And it gets them thinking about reading.

“A lot of them went home with piles of books themselves.”

Those interested in helping can donate books, with items being accepted right up to the event.

“They can bring them that weekend if they want,” Mrs Jackson said.

“Come along and buy books – they’re only $1 a book, or $10 for a bag, so really cheap.

“We’ll have Guide biscuits for sale again.”

The Girl Guides Book Sale is just the beginning for the weekend, with the St Alban’s Spring Fair expected to pull a crowd.

From 9am to 2pm on the Saturday, join in the fun at the church, located at Lower Brook Street, Muswellbrook.

There will be emergency services displays, a quilt and miniature display, vintage cars on show, coffee and food, market stalls, children’s activties, a jumping castle, and much more.
