Earlier this month, his book, The Official History of Australian Peacekeeping, Humanitarian and Post-Cold War Operations, was officially launched in Canberra.
The series, published in association with the Australian War Memorial, is Australia’s fifth Official History series.
Dr Bullard’s mother, Muswellbrook Day VIEW Club’s Nancy Bullard, said he had been working on the book part-time for 10 years.
She said he had always had a passion for military history, and had been working at the War Memorial since 1997 as a senior research officer.
His work at the time was with the Australian Japan Research Project, of which he was the project manager from 2002.
In 2007, he was appointed to research and write the most recent volume on Australia’s peacekeeping history, including peacekeeping missions since 1947, other operations since the 1980s and overseas emergency relief missions since 1918.
“He’s always been a good student,” Mrs Bullard said, adding he was Dux at both Muswellbrook Public School and Muswellbrook High School.
“He’s a Doctor of Philosophy in the area of East Asian Studies.
“Now he’s on an official history of Afghanistan book.”
Mrs Bullard said she was proud of her son because he was a country boy who had worked hard.
“He’s done all this research and he’s dedicated to what he does,” she said.
“When I had my knee done, he came home for two or three weeks to look after me and he worked on the [peacekeeping] book then.
”This is the only book that’s got them all in it – from 1918 to 2006.
“It has peacekeeping missions of all defence services.”
