But, in a good way.
After walking through the doors on October 29, 1997, Mrs Chapman recently celebrated her 20th anniversary at Merton Court.
She’s determined to add to that tally, too.
“I love what I do,” she said.
“It’s so rewarding.
“I did work placement in similar places when I was young – and realised I wanted to do hands-on care.
“The residents are the most important aspect of my job.
“And, the girls are a good bunch to work with as well.
“I was shocked [by the morning tea], however it was nice of them to put together.
“I don’t do it for the recognition.”
Merton Living general manager Shani Mitchell praised Mrs Chapman for “excelling in her role”.
“Joanne is one of the lucky ones who knew what she wanted to do in life – and that was to care for our elderly,” she said.
“She came here straight out of Muswellbrook High School.
“And, she showed leadership skills immediately, gaining a promotion early in her career.
“Joanne possesses the right balance [for a carer] – compassion and care, but she can be firm when needed.
“She is a terrific communicator.
“She’s always had the respect of staff and residents.
“Due to that, a lot of former employees – and a manager – attended our special morning tea [for her].
“These days, Joanne shares the role now that she has young children.”
