The talented golfer, and 2017 Riversdale Cup champion, currently sits in equal 10th spot following a three-under par 68 at The Australian Golf Club on Thursday.
The 22-year-old British Amateur runner-up will hope to maintain that form on Friday, as well as the upcoming weekend.
“I didn’t hit it the best, but I scrambled really well,” Perry said.
He admitted it was a confidence boost heading into the second round.
But, he didn’t have it all his own way, with bogeys at the eighth and 12th holes threatening to derail his day.
They book-ended a run of three-straight birdies on the ninth, 10th and 11th.
“It is a difficult course and I just had to stay patient because there were a few tough flags out there,” Perry said.
“When the wind gets up you have to be careful of your approaches, but I’m just going out there to enjoy myself.”
Sydney youngster Cameron Davis upstaged some of the world’s best players to take the lead.
He collected six birdies in the first eight holes before dropping a shot on the ninth to reach the turn at five-under par.
Davis finished his round at eight-under and holds a two-stroke margin over his nearest rival, Taylor Macdonald.
Aussie star Jason Day is tied for third with Nick Cullen.
They are both five-under.
It was a mixed day for American star Jordan Spieth, who struggled with consistency.
However, a birdie on the 18th moved the defending champion to -1 ahead of day two.
