The inaugural Have a Go in the Brook, hosted by Ability Links, will showcase an interactive afternoon where young and old can try their hand at a sport or an activity from dance and roller derby clubs, Little Athletics, netball, tennis and Zumba, right through to the Conservatorium of Music and Lions and CWA clubs.
Then at 8pm the event turns into an outdoor movie venue where people can watch Smurfs – The Lost Village under the stars.
Ability Links coordinator Samantha Clydsdale said the initiative was part of Social Inclusion Week (SIW) Australia, which is all about encouraging communities to reconnect and be inclusive of all cultures, age groups, nationalities and abilities.
“The theme is ‘Connect, Collaborate and Celebrate’,” Mrs Clydsdale said.
“So people can try a sport, participate in an activity or even speak to people involved in groups like the University of the Third Age, or Lions or CWA, and have a familiar face next time they want to get involved.”
There are 28 groups and stallholders involved in the showcase which includes market goods and food stalls, where everything is homemade or homegrown.
“It’s a good opportunity to make our community more inclusive,” Mrs Clydsdale said.
“We’re supported by Comprint Solutions and Compass Housing Services.”
Muswellbrook Shire Council’s technical officer for property and building services Karli Anshaw said the pavers around the toilet block would be replaced next week with a concrete slab with rolled edges and also include tactile indicators.
“This facility is heavily shared and has high usage, so it’s good to be able to make a positive impact,” Ms Anshaw said.
Have a Go in the Brook begins at 4pm and is a family-friendly event to celebrate Social Inclusion Week – strictly no alcohol. Parental supervision is also required.
Victoria Park is located at 62 Cook Street, Muswellbrook; don’t forget your picnic rugs and chairs.
Social Inclusion Week Australia was launched in 2009 and takes place in the last week of November every year.
In 2017, it runs from Saturday, November 25, to Sunday, December 3.
