About 6.45pm on Thursday, officers from the Traffic & Highway Patrol responded to reports of a car swerving from side to side, and crossing to the wrong side of the road.
A short time later, police found a Ford Ranger utility on Denman Road with the driver allegedly asleep at the wheel with the engine running.
He was subjected to a breath test and returned a positive reading.
The driver, a 62-year-old man, was arrested and taken to Muswellbrook Police Station, where he returned a reading of 0.285.
He was charged with high-range drink-driving and had his licence suspended on the spot.
He is due to appear at Muswellbrook Local Court on Monday, December 18.
Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy of the state's Traffic & Highway Patrol Command said poor decisions are costing lives on NSW roads.
“Anyone who chooses to drink and drive is making a selfish and stupid decision, and putting innocent people at risk,” he said.
“Drink-driving is a contributing factor in one out of five fatal crashes in NSW.
“We have already lost 351 lives on NSW roads this year, and it is nothing short of a tragedy that many of the lives lost were innocent passengers or other road users.
“We need people to fear being involved in a serious or fatal crash, rather than fear being caught.”
