SUNDAY’S Reconciliation Walk marked the 17th anniversary of the first Sorry Day in 1998. In his speech mayor Peter Besseling said reconciliation is “everyone’s business”. He spoke about the Stolen Generations and the need for us to show respect and remembrance of National Sorry Day as much as we do for other historical days of significance. Those who walked from the Town Green reserve to the Hay Street forecourt were as one in their commitment to reconciliation and the acknowledgement of the fact that although we are different, we are one - we are Australians. There was an atmosphere of camaraderie as Steve Donovan led the gathering in a traditional pipi dance. Uncle Bill recited his moving Welcome to Country which had special poignancy on the day. Reconciliation Day is about building better relationships between Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and the wider community and yesterday was a step in the right direction
