The Hunter Community Legal Centre (HCLC) will host an Aboriginal Wills Day, with the assistance of Gilbert and Tobin Lawyers later this month.
The event will be at the Wanaruah Local Aboriginal Land Council, on July 24 and 25, and those interested are encouraged to register.
Wanaruah Local Aboriginal Land Council administration officer Renee MacDonald said it was needed in the community.
“A lot of people don’t have will,” she said.
“They don’t think about it until it’s too late.
“There will be pro bono for low income earners.
“We have about 15 people so far attending and there’s room for a bit more.”
Ms MacDonald said the lawyers were able to help with a range of different issues, including assigning a Power of Attorney and an Appointment of Enduring Guardian.
A Will indicates what you want to happen to your money, property and belongings when you die; and can also note where you would like to be buried and who you want to look after any children in your care.
A Power of Attorney makes financial decisions for you if you can no longer make decisions for yourself, such as paying bills, operating bank accounts or dealing with Centrelink.
An Appointment of Enduring Guardian allows you to say who can make decisions about where you live, your medical treatment and what services you receive if you can no longer make those choices yourself.
The planning day will be at Wanaruah Local Aboriginal Land Council, 19 Maitland Street, Muswellbrook.
