Denman Public School sent two teams to test their skills against other students in the Upper Hunter District Primary Schools One Day Chess Tournament at the All Saints Parish Hall, Singleton.
Each child played seven games; Patrick Wear was undefeated on the day, and the Denman Public School’s teams finished first and second.
Alan Somerville and principal Megan Druitt coach the teams at lunchtimes and have put in a lot of effort to prepare children for the tournament.
“Chess is a game that requires fast thinking and problem solving on the fly because your opponent is constantly challenging the parameters. Chess also increases creative thinking in children of all ages,” Mrs Druitt said.
Denman Public School won the Regional Interschool Chess Challenge earlier this year.
They will now proceed to the finals, in Gosford on Monday, September 11.
This challenge is organised by the Sydney Academy of Chess.
The school community wishes the teams all best in these finals.
