MUSWELLBROOK’S female tennis fans are patiently waiting for their new lights to be installed.
Also, we have what they call a Rover List, and that’s for people that may have a work commitment or family commitment that can’t play every weekPark Tennis Club member Pam King
The construction, which is expected to arrive later this month, will allow them to begin the Park Tennis Club’s Ladies Night Comp.
The contest, which is entering its 37th year, is still going strong.
Club recorder Judy Cook even has account of every round played in the competition since 1981/82.
“We have a lot of people that have played year in, year out,” fellow player Pam King said.
“But, then you get a couple of people who come to town.
“We always rope a couple of new ones in each comp.
“We have Aberdeen ladies coming in.
“Also, we have what they call a Rover List, and that’s for people that may have a work commitment or family commitment that can’t play every week.
“But, they’re happy to be on the Rover List if we need to call on a player at the last minute.
“So we have that list, so some people would prefer to play as a rover because of other commitments.”
King said sometimes passers by have seen players on the court and become interested.
‘Within the next couple of weeks they’ve joined up,” she said.
“We always try to make allowances for them to give them a bit of a hit, or we nearly always need them before the comp’s over.”
The competition usually lasts until Easter the following year.
All ages are welcome to attend, with some players in their 80s
“Sometimes if we’re short, some of these people have got grandchildren, and the grandchildren come down and they love having a hit with the oldies,” King said.
“We’re lucky in that way.
“It’s fairly family orientated, and it’s a fairly social club.
“We’re not going to hold up the Wimbledon trophy, are we?
“But it’s still competitive.
“Everyone likes a win; no one backs off.”
