SUMMER is drawing closer.

And, for some, that signals the start of their favourite pastime – cricket.

A passion for many Aussies, the sport has been passed on from generation to generation.

Now, with the 2017/18 season fast approaching, Muswellbrook Junior Cricket Club president Peter Cooper is encouraging families to get involved.

“Junior cricket is really struggling at the moment,” he said.

“We’ve only filled a few sides, but there’s plenty of positions left for Under-12s, Under-10s, Under-14s.

“Even in our Under-16s, there are still some spots available.”

Anyone with an interested child is invited to join in the fun.

“No skills are required whatsoever,” Cooper said.

“We provide training and equipment for anyone who hasn’t got it.

“Throughout the week we run training drills for all the teams.

“So anyone who wants to turn up is guaranteed a spot to play pretty much.”

Cooper said there were a number of benefits for children who played the game.

“It’s more about getting out there and being healthy and active,” he said.

“It keeps them out of inside, and gets them out into the sunshine, paying with their mates.

“It’s only a few hours of a Saturday morning, and it builds some good team spirit that travels on through their junior cricket, and, if they like it through to their senior cricket, and into general life.”

The president said the competition would be very similar to 2016.

“There are not too many changes for the format to last year,” he said.

“Our Under-10s have changed a little bit to fall in line with Cricket Australia’s new format policy.

“But, other than that, it’s very similar.

“Jump on the website, which is www.playcricket.com.au

“Click on the ‘Where Can I Play?’ tab, and it will take you straight to the Muswellbrook Junior Cricket page when you put the postcode in.

“Then you can just register straight from there; it only takes about five minutes and you can pay straight online.

“We really need some players and, parents to help out.”
