But, the Dubbo man has certainly made an impact in Muswellbrook, too.
On Tuesday, his latest work, Over the Top, will be officially unveiled during the town’s Battle of Beersheba 100-year anniversary commemorations by the five mayors of Muswellbrook Shire – The Honourable John Jobling, OAM, MStJ – First Mayor of Muswellbrook (1974 – 1986), Mr Ian Wolfgang – Second Mayor of Muswellbrook (1986 – 1989), Mr Ian Seymour, OAM – Third Mayor of Muswellbrook (1989 – 1999), Brig. (Ret.) John Colvin, AM, RFD, ED – Fourth Mayor of Muswellbrook (1999 – 2008) and current mayor, Councillor Martin Rush.
And, Mr Garling is proud of the finished product.
“It was humbling to be involved [in the process]; I’m most grateful to do what I do,” he said.
“I’ve worked on it since November last year.
“When I arrived here with the statue [on Friday], 99 per cent of the comments were positive.
“So, it’s terrific that we’re creating a sense of community spirit.
“Without culture, we have nothing.
“I wouldn’t miss it [the unveiling] for anything.
“I’m sure the local residents will appreciate it as well.
“My affiliation with the town started with the Blue Heeler statue and I’ve fallen in love with Muswellbrook.
“What [Muswellbrook Shire] council’s doing there is marvellous.
“The change in the main street is fantastic.
“A lot of country towns could take a leaf from council’s book.”
The self-confessed Australian history buff admitted he knew a bit about the Battle of Beersheba beforehand.
“It was a major event – and it reunited the country, much like Gallipoli,” he said.
“In other words, it gave us a sense of who we are.
“Full credit to everyone involved in Tuesday’s ceremony.”
All residents are invited to attend – and encouraged to gather in Brook Street, which will be closed for the duration of the event, before 2.45pm, when guests will assemble and the Mounting of the Guard and entry of the Light Horse starts proceedings.
Special guests at the opening and dedication will include members of the Cameron family, descendants of Lieutenant-Colonel Donald Cameron, DSO and Bar, Commanding Officer 12th Australian Light Horse Regiment 1917-1919.
The official ceremony starts at 3pm and will be followed by the church service at 4.30pm, at St Alban’s Anglican Church in Brook Street.
The congregation is asked to be seated by 4.20pm.
