Representatives from the mining company donated a cardiac defibrillator and a National Workplace Industrial First Aid kit to the Men’s Shed as the members were running on basic home-style supplies.
Mt Arthur Coal’s gesture highlighted its appreciation of the local group’s commitment to community work and assistance, of which BHP Billiton is a great advocate of.
“The guys do a terrific job,” community team leader Mick Hanly said.
“And, we have a good understanding of the work they undertake in the community.
“So, this equipment is the least we can do.”
The donation will go a long way to ensure the shed now has the correct gear to support the men’s health issues that the members often suffer.
“It might save a life,” president Brian Eveleigh said.
“We have 40 or so members; and all of it [the equipment] will be kept on the premises.
“We’re extremely proud of our facility.
“We’ve been in our ‘home’ almost 12 months.
“And, we’re delighted our close association with BHP Billiton is set to continue.”
Mr Arthur’s involvement with the Muswellbrook Men’s Shed began with the company’s land rehabilitation program.
The members constructed native animal breeding boxes for the rehab areas.
Also present on Monday was Mat Latimore, representing the Variety Club Bash Car 308 STATO and the Mt Arthur Coal B2 Rescue team who runs a social club.
They were kind enough to also donate a trauma kit to the Men’s Shed.
The members expressed their gratitude to Car 308 and the B2 Rescue team for their contribution and look forward to continually working with the Variety Club and its efforts to raise funds for a number of causes.
The Men’s Shed then reciprocated its appreciation by presenting the donors with certificates of appreciation.
“We’d just like to thank BHP Billiton and the Variety Club for their donations,” Mr Eveleigh said.
The Muswellbrook Men’s Shed welcomes new members, too.
They meet at their new facility on Industrial Close each and every Wednesday from 9am to 3pm.
