But, instead of just cutting her long locks, she displayed maturity beyond her years by opting to donate her curls to the Hair with Heart program.
Now, the 10-year-old’s hoping the community and local businesses will get behind her effort to raise funds for Variety – the Children’s Charity who offer Aussie kids a fair go.
On Tuesday, at the Girl Guides hall, the Muswellbrook South Public School student underwent the big “chop”, thanks to Deb Janek from Colourworks for Hair.
The donated hair will be sent to specialised wig makers who make wigs for those who have lost their hair due to a medical condition such as alopecia.
“Georgia has been growing her hair for five years,” mum Linda said.
“However, when it came time for a cut, she decided to give it to Variety.
“It means a lot to Georgia to be donating her hair because she can make a difference to a girl just like her.
“She’s also raising money for Variety.
“Her target is $750, but she’s already halfway there.”
Georgia’s hair can assist Variety help Aussie kids by providing practical equipment, programs and experiences to overcome obstacles they face and live life to the fullest.
Erin, 13, was diagnosed with alopecia and, within six months, she was completely bald.
She was granted a wig from Variety and reclaimed her confidence and self-esteem.
“She just wanted to feel ‘normal’ again and the wig from Variety certainly made all the difference,” her mum Maria said.
“Her confidence sky-rocketed.”
Variety – the Children’s Charity CEO David Sexton said people like Georgia made a big difference for Aussie kids.
“Variety doesn’t receive any government funding, so every wig and every piece of equipment granted to families is thanks to the amazing efforts of people like Georgia,” he explained.
“We can’t thank people like Georgia enough for their dedicated efforts to help us help Aussie kids.”
